National Youth Jazz Orchestra
NYJO is world-famous as a glittering showcase for the country’s best young musicians. Since NYJO’s founding, by Bill Ashton OBE in 1965, most of the current generation of top British jazz musicians have risen through its ranks, often becoming established jazz stars whilst still playing with the band.
One of NYJO’s aims is to share the talents of exciting young players with as wide a potential audience as possible. Classics from the big band canon sit alongside specially commissioned new arrangements by band members and leading contemporary UK composers. From hard-swinging rhythm section to a raft of hugely talented young soloists, this is a big band in fine form.
The programme will feature classics from the big band canon and great American songbook, contemporary work by leading international composers and originals by members of the band. The audience can also look forward to 'All Blues', a classic recorded by Miles Davis which appears on the GCSE music syllabus.
School Groups: tickets £5 for children, teachers free.
Pre-show educational event
With the support of Jump Start, the NYJO will run a pre-show educational event to schools from 5-6.30pm in which the Artistic and Music Director, Mark Armstrong, will introduce the entire orchestra and demonstrate the anatomy of a big band. Mark will break down the big band explaining the different sections and their roles. They will use the full band to demonstrate different sections, and there will also be some interactive bits. Anyone who brings instruments with them and wants to join in may be able to try a few things with the band.
JUMP START ALSO HAS A LIMITED NUMBER OF TICKETS AVAILABLE TO SCHOOLS AT £1 ONLY. For more info please contact Hayley Reay on firstname.lastname@example.org.
*Tickets include a 10% Booking Fee.
