BBC Ten Pieces Plus

  • Studio 5, Toynbee Studios 28 Commercial Street London E1 6AB United Kingdom

About the course

This is a whole day workshop based on the Ten Pieces Plus CD Rom, a resource for primary school teachers and workshop leaders, created by Sue Nicholls and Hilary Miles.

During this one-day course, Sue and Hilary will guide you through a collection of practical activities for each of the BBC Ten Pieces aimed specifically at three age groups: Years 1 & 2, Years 3 & 4 and Years 5 & 6. Learn more about new and accessible material to extend and embed the innovative BBC Ten Pieces project into your teaching. This incredibly popular resource works as a progressive programme but could equally serve as ‘dip-in’ material to best accommodate teachers’ planning.

A copy of the Ten Pieces Plus CD Rom is included in the course price.

The CD Rom

Here is some further information about what’s included in the Ten Pieces Plus CD Rom:

A: PERFORMANCE PIECE

Brand new songs and classroom percussion arrangements have been composed to capture key musical ideas from each of the Ten Pieces. These are presented as complete performances recorded with backing tracks and individual instrumental parts. Notated copies of songs are found with every set of teachers’ notes.

B: CREATIVE ACTIVITY

Improvisation or composition activities, fully supported with ‘how to’ notes and, where appropriate, grids, templates or composition cards follow on from each performance piece. These creative activities are aimed at the generalist practitioner and underpin the content of the National Curriculum.

C: CROSS-CURRICULAR DEVELOPMENT

A broader look at the Ten Pieces, offering a wide range of ideas that connect the music to everyday classroom delivery. Each cross-curricular activity is arts-based linking the curriculum areas of Drama (Speaking and Listening), Poetry & Creative Writing, Art & Design and Dance.
Additional music links are listed to provide further listening opportunities and a glossary attempts to demystify commonly used musical terms: song and rap lyrics are offered as PowerPoint slides.

The Ten Pieces Plus CD Rom contains original music and teachers’ notes written by Sue Nicholls and Hilary Miles. The resource was commissioned by Northamptonshire Music and Performing Arts Trust and Lincolnshire Music Service for the schools of the Lincolnshire Music and Arts Education Hub, Rutland Music Education Hub and Northamptonshire Music Education Hub.
