About the Day

AOTOS Pathways Programme 2016

The AOTOS Access day is the first component of the AOTOS Pathways Programme, launched in 2015.

Pathways is a Teacher-Mentor based course showing aspiring singing teachers how to acquire the basic skills needed to start teaching safely and with confidence.

Our present programme consists of:

  • an introductory Access Day
  • six Teacher-Mentor sessions and
  • a Follow-up day

The Access Day

The Access Day introduces the new teacher to the members of the AOTOS Teacher Training Team, who build up a picture of the needs of each individual teacher through a combination of group activities and individual interviews.

Prior to the Access Day you will be asked to complete a questionnaire giving a picture of your journey so far which will help us to understand your particular strengths and needs. At this stage there is no obligation to continue with the Pathways programme if it is not currently right for you.

There is a choice of two venues for the Access Day:

  • Kingswood School, Bath (30 January 2016) and
  • St Mary's Music School, Edinburgh (8 May 2016)

Teacher-Mentor Sessions – Each participant is paired with an experienced AOTOS Mentor.
Through six regular sessions – usually online with an AOTOS-approved Teacher-Mentor – a course of study and development is tailored to your individual needs. Sessions may include lesson content, problem-solving from lessons taught, repertoire, basic technique and general advice on personal development skills (e.g. singing lessons or keyboard skills) and lesson observations.

Follow-up Day – This is an interactive group day, with emphasis on shared teaching, specific exercises and learning techniques. There is also an opportunity to discuss your future development with your Mentor, and the Teacher Training Team.

On completion of all three sections of the course, teachers will be awarded a Completion Certificate.
