About the summer school
Milton Abbey International Music Festival Summer School 2016 is a week of inspiring music making and performances in the idyllic setting of Milton Abbey, in the heart of the Dorset countryside.
Hosted by internationally-renowned British vocal ensemble VOCES8, the Summer School brings together people from all walks of life and gives everyone the chance to develop their vocal, musical and performance skills.
Combining an engaging week of masterclasses with performance opportunities, the Summer School is open to singers of all ages and abilities. The magnificent location of Milton Abbey School, with its 13th-century Abbey, extensive facilities and supportive community atmosphere provides the perfect environment for an unforgettable week of music making, learning, performing, activities and socialising, and a chance to share this experience with specialists and like-minded enthusiasts from all over the world.
Choral course highlights
The Choral Course combines a daily set of warmups and masterclasses with
VOCES8 with two concerts and the opportunity to experience liturgical music
making. These performance opportunities, as part of the International Festival,
offer course participants the chance to engage with a diverse range of repertoire
and the chance to work and perform with internationally-renowned musicians.
Concerts and repertoire
Concert 1: Chamber Groups
An important part of the choral course will be the afternoon chamber group sessions
led by members of VOCES8. Participants will have the opportunity to work in smaller
ensembles on a varied set of repertoire. This concert is the opportunity for the chamber
groups to showcase their hard work.
Concert 2: Requiem – Mozart and Five Mystical Songs – Vaughan Williams
This Festival Gala Concert will be a rousing finale accompanied by the Festival
Orchestra, professional players drawn from top London symphony orchestras as well as
the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Conducted by VOCES8’s Artistic Director,
Barnaby Smith, the concert will also include Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 in G minor and
orchestral music from The Marriage of Figaro. The soloist for the Five Mystical Songs will
be Ben Nelson.
Liturgical performance: Festival Choral Evensong in Milton Abbey
Course participants will have the option to lead the service of Choral Evensong in
the Abbey. England has a celebrated cathedral choral tradition and the singing of
the service of Evensong plays a daily role. Participants will have the opportunity to
discover and experience this culture with a performance of Choral Evensong with
Age range of participants
