About the course
Young Grittleton is a chamber music course designed for young string players aged between 11 and 18.
Two five day residential courses take place at Shrewsbury School in August, where all musicians receive chamber music coaching in small ensembles and rehearse and perform together as a string orchestra. The course culminates with an informal concert on the final day.
- Week 1: 7-12 August 2016
- Week 2: 14-19 August 2016
Ensembles are arranged on the course, based on age, standard and experience, however requests to play with friends are always considered. All music is provided but students are also encouraged to bring repertoire they would especially like to play.
Young violinists and cellists need to be at least Grade 6 standard. Viola players need to be Grade 5 standard. Older players are often well past Grade 8 standard.
- If you have any concerns, please contact the course director, Philip Aird, via email@example.com who will be able to advise you.
Although the playing schedule is busy, there is plenty of time for socialising and to make use of the extensive facilities the school has to offer. These include an indoor pool, all-weather tennis courts, facilities for badminton and table tennis, and beautiful grounds, that are all available for use during free time. On each Wednesday evening there is a concert given by the course tutors.
- Violin: Philip Aird (course director), Steve Bingham, Fiona Robertson
- Viola: Mandy Britton, Carmen Flores
- Cello: Christopher Allan, Josephine Handy
