Royal Philharmonic Society Gold Medallist, Dame Janet Baker, presented the 'silver lyre' trophies to winners in 13 categories for outstanding achievement in 2012.

A further four awards of Honorary Membership were presented to international visionary music-makers on four continents as part of the the RPS's 2013 bicentenary celebrations.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, RPS Chairman, John Gilhooly, heralded an 'outstanding year' for classical music despite the difficult economic climate. He cautioned about forgetting the 'true value of culture', saying:

'Making money never has, and never should be, the driving force for great art. The Philharmonic Society sent Beethoven £100 on his deathbed to ease his penury, and commissioned Beethoven's 9th Symphony, not because they expected or even hoped for a blockbuster success but because they, quite simply, wanted to hear more of his music.

'So, whilst mindful of the absolute need to unite with the government and funders in framing the positive economic arguments for expenditure on the arts, let's not allow creativity, vision, excellence, enjoyment and culture's potential to change lives to be lost in the debate, even in times of austerity.'

The winners were as follows:

The European Festivals Association (EFA) launched a new initiative, The Festival Academy, last month during its 2013 General Assembly in Granada, Spain.

Odile Qunitin at the launch of The Festival AcademyWith the motto, The true role of a festival is to help artists to dare to engage in new projects (Bernard Faivre d’Arcier, former Director, Avignon Festival), The Festival Academy offers training formats for festival management to young, dynamic and passionate festival-makers worldwide.

Explaining the motivation behind the new initiative, EFA President, Darko Brlek, said:

'EFA set up The Festival Academy based on the success of the Atelier for Young Festival Managers, the seven-day training programme and its six editions between 2006 and 2013 in different parts of Europe and beyond, and its predecessor, Eurofest Training Programme, held in Geneva and Estoril in 1999/2000. The Festival Academy incorporates extended partnerships with networks, cultural institutes, embassies and festivals, higher geographical outreach and new training formats in festival management addressed at more diverse target groups.'

Board member of The Festival Academy, Odile Quintin (European Commission External Advisor, former Director General) said:

'The engagement of the European Festivals Association in allowing life-long learning experiences in the cultural sector is exemplary. These kinds of initiatives are crucial for the further development of a cultural Europe. Nobody will be successful by doing business as usual. We need young creative minds for regenerating and rethinking the future.'

In 2013, The Festival Academy includes three training formats:

the Atelier for Young Festival Managers, a seven-day training programme aimed at 45 young artistic festival managers who are guided by 10 renowned festival directors from all over the world

the Festival Readings, a three-day encounter taking place during a festival with readings by high-level lecturers from the festival sector addressed at festival representatives working in a broad range of festival departments and open to the general public

the Training for Production Managers, an exchange on festival production addressed at young production managers

Upcoming activities include:

Ateliers for Young Festival Managers in Beirut, Lebanon (5-12 October 2013), in Edinburgh, UK (3-10 April 2014), and Kampala, Uganda (21-28 September 2014)

the first Festival Readings in Sibiu, Romania, during the Sibiu Performing Arts Open Market (11-13 June 2013)

In addition to these activities, The Festival Academy aims to sustain and further develop the Academy Alumni Network which has emerged from previous Ateliers for Young Festival Managers. Today, it numbers 172 young festival leaders and 28 renowned festival directors from 52 countries and regions worldwide. The network ensures sustainability beyond the training formats and allows for the development of new cooperation projects and broader networks.
